I had the pleasure of recently seeing Huddersfield Town narrowly defeat Derby early in the season and in the after match entertainment listened to the legendary former Town player Frank Worthington tell the story of his ‘wonder goal’.
“My brilliant goal against Ipswich for Bolton under the brilliant Ian Greaves who managed me here at Huddersfield Town – Fantastic days they were. This is the best goal in English football.
From the throw-in it came in from a flick on from my old colleague Alan Gowling. I controlled it on my head. I’m outside the penalty area and I’ve got four International defenders behind me; Russell Osman, Terry Butcher, Mickey Mills and George Burley.
I’m outside the penalty area and I’m juggling with it; I was the top ball juggler in the country. All of a sudden I flicked the ball over my head and sprung past Terry Butcher, who reminded me of an MFI wardrobe. As I thumped past him the ball dropped down and I hit that beautiful volley right in the far corner past Paul Cooper’s left hand.
As I turned to acknowledge the brilliant Bolton fans, I suddenly felt sorry for Terry Butcher. I did, I felt sorry for him, but I couldn’t resist saying to him as I pointed over to the main stand, ‘you would have had a better view of it from over there!’.”
Frank Worthington, truly a one-off!

I had a season ticket at Leicester, where Frank had his best days, and played for England. Those flashes of brilliance were a regular occurance for us,we worshipped the man. A Ladies man without doubt, but a truly great performer and entertainer. There isnt the like of him now,and probably never will be.
