Brian Hewitt: Alan Ball's boots

My favourite soccer memory is via the fact the back in the late sixties/early seventies every player wore BLACK football boots!

FACT!

Until I took over as Marketing Director of Hummel Football Boots when they were first introduced to the UK in 1969/70 and in order to make them stand out from Adidas and Puma, I actually made white boots which were worn by Alan Ball - that was a FIRST!

The real story is that whilst Hummel did make boots, Alan couldn't initially wear them and so for the first ever outing on a UK pitch (Wembley in the Charity Shield game - Everton v Arsenal) we actually had his Adidas boots painted white and delivered them to him about ten minutes before the start of the game.

That is how coloured boots came to the UK football game!

They were the first boots I bought when I had enough money! As I recall, Alan Hinton wore them as well. They were a pain to clean and keep white, but were a lovely boot to wear.
