Frank Whitehead: memories of the 1955/1956 season

It was Christmas 1955 and I was 8 years old but already watching every Town match at home, both first team from behind the Open Kilner Bank Goals or the Reserves from the Paddock.

On 24th December Town had beaten Sunderland 4-0.

On the 26th we had lost to Blackpool at Bloomfield Road 4-2 and in those days at Christmas and Easter, Town played the reverse fixture the day after.

So on 27th December Town played Blackpool at Leeds Road.

My two childhood heroes were the great Stanley Matthews and Town’s Jimmy Glazzard.

As we walked over Dalton Ford and down Kilner Bank to the match my Dad said ‘now do not be disappointed but Matthews and Glazzard will not play three matches in four days at their age’.

But both played and Town won 3-1. Although Jimmy did not score I saw them both.

In late March 1956 the great Tommy Taylor led the Manchester United front line and scored both goals in front of me at the Open End as United won 2-0.

Town were relegated from Division One at the end of the season so it was the last visit by United before Munich in February 1958.

The last match of the season saw Town relegated but we bear Bolton Wanderers 3-1 and Glazzard scored with a header. The last goal he scored for Town and I was there.
