If my memory serves me right it was 1986 and I was a sub for The Pleasant Inn ( Blackley) versus Newton Heath United in a Blackley league game. It was on the pitch running parallel to Lightbowne Road, right where FC United of Manchester have built their new stadium. It has many memories for me, firstly the obvious history in the name of Newton Heath United (whom I remember some years before, used to play on Newton Heath Loco, the original pitch with its railway sleepers for standing on). Anyhow the Sunday morning we went on to win the game with a record score at the time of 26 - 1, my abiding memory though was Newton Heath insisting on playing with only the 8 men that turned up to play for them that day, Just lads wanting to play the game they love. Happy days.
