Stephen Smith: 1982, a League Cup win at Leeds United

I could fill my own book with football memories. My first league game somewhere around 1966 (aged 5) being one of them - Huddersfield playing Blackburn Rovers at Leeds Road, over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend.

Hearing the crowd chanting "Gilliver - Gilliver" to Town favourite Alan Gilliver, who reacted by signing for Blackburn, and playing against us on the Monday afterwards.

A more vividly recalled memory was Town's victory over Leeds in the mid 80's at Elland Road. A night match in the League Cup.

The goal scorer was one David Cowling - a much needed player at Huddersfield, but one who also frustrated fans, and had more than the odd off game.

When the ball hit the back of the net, the Huddersfield supporters went berserk, it was as if the last 20 years of Leeds winning trophies and Town getting relegated, had been avenged in an instant. Never had a single goal been celebrated with as much vigour and for so long.

After the immediate jubilation died down though, I heard a dour Yorkshire accent cut through the joy : "The bugger'll expect to play every week now I expect !"

In Yorkshire there's no such thing as a perfect victory.

Stephen Smith
