Tony Henderson: matchday at St. James'

As a boy I sat like many others on a low wall which skirted the cinder track around the pitch at St James Park, Newcastle.

At half time bands would march around the track. Sometimes these were Scottish pipe bands.

Us kids would lick fruit gums and similar sweets and stick them on the passing hairy legs of the kilted pipers who, of course while playing the bagpipes could do nothing about it.

As they marched off their legs would be completely studded with firmly attached sweets, to our great delight as we anticipated their painful removal.

Strange but true.

Tony Henderson.
