I attended my first York City match at Bootham Crescent in 1963 as a 7 year old boy, with my dad and grandad. I was hooked from the outset and over the past 51 years have continued to enjoy following City, missing only one home league game since I married 31 years ago.
As a child I dreamt of going to Wembley to watch York, but in those days the only chance was through the FA Cup or League Cup. My mum and dad had attended the infamous FA Cup semi final in March 1955 against Newcasle United at Hillsborough, giving them fantastic, never to be forgotten memories, and being within touching distance of Wembley. One of my own FA Cup glory memories was the home 4th round match against Southampton in January 1971. The Saints included the likes of Terry Paine, Mick Channon, and Ron Davies and were expected to beat City and led 3 1 with only 3 minutes to go. After Dick Hewitt pulled one goal back, striker Paul Aimson then rose majestically to head home a stunning last minute equaliser with his head, and I and thousands others went beserk.
Aimson was a top striker and netted 31 goals in all competitions that season.
Of course Wembley has become a second home over more recent years with 4 visits in 5 years undertaken with my son, whose own dream to see City at Wembley arrived at a much younger age.
The next game will be a special one too for me against Newport County. City have confirmed league 2 status but I am attending the game once again with my dad who is 90 years young and has not been to a game for many years but has always maintained a very keen interest throughout his life. Having first attended Bootham Crescent together 51 years ago it will be an absolute pleasure to do so again and share the match day experience once again following our beloved York City which has had such a special and huge place in our hearts.
