Tomi Honkanen: memories of a fan from Finland

I started to support York City in the early eighties. As a teenager in the early eighties I didn’t have a possibility to travel to matches on my own from Finland, so I had to find a way to follow City’s fortunes as easily as possible.

The Finnish betting magazine was a nice start, all the results, scorers, attendances, tables once a week but the best thing was listening the results over BBC short waves on match days. In midweek fixtures this meant waking up in the middle of the night. BBC sports programme came out around 01.45 Finnish time in the night. A good result meant good sleep before the alarm clock rang a few hours later!

My first actual visit to York took place in 1987 and after that I’ve seen a lot of City matches, usually twice a season plus those great Wembley matches since 1993. Wembley win in 1993 was a great thriller with the penalties. That was my first-ever visit to Wembley and I was there with my dad who wanted to see Wembley. Our first-ever visit to the new Wembley was a great experience as well, despite losing the Trophy final but then in 2012 I witnessed both of those two great games, the Trophy win and the promotion final win.

I travelled back to work after the Newport win and came back the following weekend to see our promotion back to the Football League, wow! This spring I witnessed City’s win over Cheltenham just a bit over couple of weeks ago.

Kind regards
