I have been a massive York City fan for over 30 years and one of the most surreal games that I have been to was the re-arranged match between Brighton & Hove Albion v York City on Thursday Morning, the 9th May 1996 following the original match in April 1996 being postponed / cancelled following a massive pitch invasion by the Brighton & Hove Albion Fans who were angered about leaving the Goldstone Ground.
As York City fans will remember, York City needed to win the match to stay in Division 2 (what is now Division 1) and whilst I should have been in a lecture at University at Preston as I was only 19 at the time (poor student!!), I decided that the match was too important to miss and travelled down the day before to watch the match and stayed in a very cheap B&B. It was so strange (especially in 1996 when most matches were on Saturday and kicked off at 3pm) that the match was kicked off at 11am in front of a crowd of around 2,000 with a good contingent of them being York City fans.
I think I remember Brighton scoring first but then I remember Gary Bull (my sister loved him!!!) scored a great equaliser and then Paul Stephenson (great winger!!!) scored a great curling shot which put us in front and I cannot remember who scored the third but it did not matter as all the York fans were jumping around on a Thursday Morning singing “We are staying up” and enjoying the sunshine. One of the best days even and whilst I was very tired, it was an enjoyable (but expensive) trip back to Preston where I had to catch up with my studies!!!!
Oh, how I wish all Thursday Morning were like that !!!
