David Heron; 1984, my first away match

My first away game was during the record breaking 83-84 season when York City finished the campaign with 101 points and 96 goals.

It was early 1984 and I'd just turned 14. My brother offered to take me to Rochdale on a Tuesday night for my first ever away game. It was quite cold and rainy but that didn't stop 800 or so York City fans from traveling to Spotland. At the time it was quite literally the most exciting experience of my life!

We won the game 2-0 with both goals coming from John Byrne. I can't remember too much about the game but I can remember the feeling when both goals went in and the excitement in the away end.

I've been to Rochdale many times since then and each time I go it takes me back to a cold and wet Tuesday night in 1984.
