George Laidler: memories of the 1940s

I go back to 1940 when I saw my first match at St. James Park at the start of the War Years, watched a lot of Great players who guested for Newcastle in those days, but my very special memory was waiting for Jackie Milburn getting off the Bus at the Haymarket, with many more kids we would walk up to the ground with him, he signed autographs all the way,his autograph was worth one penny on Monday morning at school, from the kids who couldn't afford to go to the Match.

He was everyone's hero and played on the right wing in those days. I have many memories of North East football, and played for West Stanley, Gateshead, North Shields and Newburn in the late 50's and early 60's
