Chester Burnett: 1958, a memorable hat-trick

I shall never forget the day Stan Lynn scored the first hat trick from full back in the history of the Football League.

It was in 1958 and I had just started going down (with my dad) the season before. Stan (The Wham) was noted for his powerful blasts at opposition goalkeepers. If anyone was to achieve this remarkable feat it was the man we got from Accrington Stanley. Sunderland were our opponents. They had a cannonball of their own in Charlie Fleming but on this day when it rained incessantly Stan reigned supreme. The only one of the three I saw from underneath the magnificent Trinity Stand was his shot from outside the area. Their goalkeeper Fraser must have been sick of the sight of Stan advancing towards him in the driving rain. It was that day that I had Bovril for the first time. It tasted very nice with the pepper that dad had put in. I know we scored five it wasn't often we did that.

A wonderful day!
