Rob Burford: 1953, my first visit to Ashton Gate

I well remember my first visit to Ashton Gate back in 1953 against Leeds United, then in the Second Division. With my face pushed almost through the railings by what seemed a vast standing crowd (kids were passed down to the front in those days like parcels), I was a witness to quite literally a battle of giants.

Our own “Big John” Atyeo and probably City’s roughest, toughest player ever “Arnie” Rogers versus John Charles prior to becoming the first British big name export to Juventus.
