I remember going to watch the 1988 FA Cup Final with my Dad. He was from Wimbledon, as were all his family, so we had a big row of Chaplins at Wembley, as we sat with his brother and his wife, cousins, nephews, etc.
Wimbledon had been a non league side only a few years before and were now in the FA Cup Final against a Liverpool side containing all time greats like Hansen, Beardsley and Barnes. Wimbledon were massive underdogs, and shouldn't have had a hope, but with their amazing team spirit (they'd apparently all popped down the local pub the night before the game) and no little skill, they scored through Lawrie Sanchez, and then defended like maniacs, culminating in Dave Beasant's fantastic penalty save.
My main memory is of my Dad turning green and being unable to watch any of the second half because he was so nervous. I ended up watching him most of the time to check he hadn't keeled over.
But it was worth it for a 1-0 win and one of the biggest FA Cup shocks ever.
