Sheila Hood: 1969 Fairs Cup

My best memories are around our 69 Fairs Cup win.

I was at all the home matches but the first one against Feyenoord I remember so well. I was with my dad in the Leazes End and on came their team and started warming up doing all the stretching and limbering up we all see today but this certainly wasn't the norm at SJP in those days. Me and my dad looked at each other with worried and incredulous faces expecting our run to be very short-lived. But we won decisively and continued winning. Memories are Pop Robsons goal against Sporting Lisbon viewed from the stands as my dad was away and my uncle took me to these hallowed seats! Snow against Setubal then the riotous antics of the Rangers fans. Me, my friend and my dad were on the corner of the Gallogate and Popular End right amongst them. My poor dad must have been terrified but my friend and I loved every minute of it. I listened to the away leg of the final on a little transistor radio with my family only seeing Bobby lifting the cup on late night highlights. And of course me and my friend Judith went straight from school still in our grammar school uniforms, to see the lads bring back the cup to St James.

Happy happy days wish we could see them again!
