Ken Farrington: 1966 F.A. Cup Final

It has to be the 1966 FA Cup Final against Sheffield Wednesday, which I didn't attend though I was lucky enough to obtain a ticket for the World Cup Final several weeks later.

I watched it in the family home in Everton on a black & white television wth my younger brother, John, then aged 10.

He was in floods of tears when Everton went 2-0 down and I recall saying a prayer asking for what seemed like a miracle at the time, an Everton comeback but that is what happened.

Two goals from Mike Trebilcock who was a shock selection and a fine winner from Derek Temple (who we all nicknamed Shirley as he sometimes played like her!) saw us home 3-2 and brother John was now ecstatic at seeing captain Brian Labone lift the FA Cup for the first time in our lifetime.

One sequel to the match was meeting Ray Wilson when I moved to Huddersfield in the 1970's and chewing the fat with him about that match and the other not insignificant event when he was part of the England team that beat West Germany 4-2 to lift the World Cup which again has not been repeated in my lifetime, either before or since.
