This has to be the end of the same campaign – 71/72, when we beat Exeter at home in the last game of the season, in front of a crowd of over 23,000, to win the Championship. Ironically, this was a rearranged fixture, with the first one being “fogged-off” earlier in the season, so it brought much needed extra revenue.
The difference in the size of the crowd, compared with the first of the season, which incidentally was a derby against Scunthorpe, sticks in my mind as amazing! It was so busy in the area around the ground that the Exeter team coach couldn’t get through, and their manager was late handing in the team sheet. I asked the ref to fine them, but he saw the funny side of it and let them off!
The crowd that day and the people of the town as a whole showed great support and passion for the club, which is something that I will never forget and, although I moved on to other challenges, they remain very fond memories of an extremely special time in my life.
I always enjoy returning to Grimsby, and being present at the opening of “Mcmenemy’s Suite” some years ago, was a great privilege, as was the more recent reunion of the 71/72 squad – great times!!

The 72 match against Exeter is my favourite memory too. The original match was abandoned on my birthday. I twagged college to attend the rearranged match!
