Sally Smith: visits from Kevin Drinkell and Leeds United

My brother (Mark Waite), has set the scene for our family involvement with GTFC. Growing up in a football mad family meant that I either had to shut up, or join in. To some extent I chose the latter. I remember going with dad to watch the mariners as as teenager. The bank holiday Leeds United match, sticks in my memory. I can still see the mass of Leeds fans in the Osmond stand, singing and chanting.

I worked in several part time roles over the years at the club, in the food huts (very cold), selling lottery tickets in the exec boxes in the newly built Findus stand ( much warmer!) and occasionally in the bar. I used to then run to the Pontoon to stand with my friends, Elaine, Whinny, David and several others to watch the game, rushing back at half time to work again.

I remember Paul Wilkinson scoring his debut goal, Mike Brolly running down the wing, Nigel Batch in goal and Kevin Drinkall - a young teenagers dream!! Kevin Drinkall once came to our house, as he and dad were doing a 'commercial' activity in the village. I was a totally entranced 13 year old. He was probably about 20 and the two of us sat in complete, excruciating silence, left by a mum who thought it funny, in the front room waiting for dad.

I still occasionally go to matches, but GTFC still continues to give dad pleasure and enjoyment, nearly 60 years since he first became involved with them.
