My memory is with Grimsby Town , but not for a Town game.
On Wednesday 23 February 1972 , I had the good furtune to travel on the Town club coach with Lawrie McMenemy , Dave Worthington , Matt Tees ( My all time GTFC Hero) and the rest of the Division 4 league winners for that season. We went to see Sheffield Wednesday play Santos. It was an afternoon game , being changed from an evening game due to the miner's strike and power shortages meaning the floodlights could not be used. Santos ran out 2-0 winners. The game was a drab affair , but that mattered little. Playing for Santos was the greatest footballer of all time : PELE , also in the team was the Brazilian wing wizard Jairzinho. Both of these players had terrorised England and the rest of the world teams in the 1970 Mexico World Cup. They eventually ran out 4-1 winners over Italy in what many consider the best final , the best goal ( the last one by Carlos Alberto after such wonderful interplay and build up to a brilliant finish by the full back) and probbaly the best team the world has ever seen.
That afternoon was one I will never forget. I saw the best footballer of all time and I travelled with one of the greatest GTFC teams of all time , certainly one that was successful, community spirited and gave real commitment to the club.
I was 19 years old. Old enough to appreciate the players I saw and young enough to carry those memories for a lifetime.
Oh Happy days !!!
