James Walker: 1992, David Kelly goal

David Kelly 85th minute winner 1992 vs Portsmouth at SJP!

I was 8 years old stood on a concrete bollard in the Gallowgate end under the scoreboard behind the goal. Newcastle had been frustrated by Alan Knight and the Pompey defence, Newcastle needed a win to survive in the football league to give them a chance going to Leicester at Filbert Street the week after.

Biting nails, frustration, sore throat from singing my heart out, the ball got played forward, Micky Quinn chested it down, played a reverse ball round the corner into David Kelly's path. 16 yards out on the half volley across the keeper and into the middle of the gallowgate goal. The relief the sheer joy and ecstasy of the goal the noise I've still never heard a reaction like it at sjp since and doubt I will. Amazing went to Leicester the week later and saw Gav Peacock score and Steve Walsh scoring an own goal to keep us up!!

Unbelievable! When football was football and not a business!
