As a favour to the fishermen who put the great in Grimsby Town always had a home match on Good Friday. By the early 1980's the fishing industry was history but the matches continued. Good Friday 1982 saw Barnsley as visitors. The Yorkshiremen were going for promotion with Town fighting at the other end of Division 2.
The Barnsley fans packed into the Osmond went mad as their team scored two quickish goals and controlled the game. However cometh the hour, cometh the man. Town were blessed to have in their ranks one Trevor Whymark - easily the best player to represent GTFC in my time of supporting The Mariners. A shot from the edge of the box gave town some light at the end of the tunnel. The equaliser followed quickly and with the fans roaring them on from three sides of the compact ground, what proved to be the winner followed as the game was drawing to a close.
Barnsley and their fans were shattered and they never recovered that season, missing out on promotion. Town took heart and played well enough to stay in that division, punching above their weight.
Great times!
