Arthur Dawson: Alec "Ginger" Hall

Alec 'Ginger' Hall was Grimsby's right half and a local lad who I once saw working on the morning of a match in my village, some 25 miles from Grimsby. This was before the war so transport was a little different then but I still saw him playing at Blundell Park later that afternoon. He was a joiner and part time player but this was in Grimsby's First Division days so he was playing against international footballers and against teams like Arsenal and Manchester United. You often saw him cycling to the match with his boots tied by their laces to the handlebars and people shouting 'give it to them Ginger!' as he rode past. This was in the 1930s and I was a schoolboy at the time travelling to matches by train.
