Phil McVeigh: 1994, Alan Buckley leaves for West Brom

I remember Alan Buckley leaving the Mighty Mariners to join West Bromwich Albion. The man was a legend amongst the Town fans, with 2 successive promotions, up to the old Second Division.

My Grandad rang me to tell me "he's gone and he's taken Arthur Mann and O'Kelly with him". I remember not being that bothered about it at the time. In fact I was excited because GTFC would have to get a new Manager....that experience was new to me...a new face to continue the revolution!!

The day that sticks in the memory...and my first experience of 'betrayal' was at Blundell Park. Grimsby vs WBA ... AB's first time back but this time, with the opposition. I remember being stood at pitchside, before the game started. The teams were warming up. All of a sudden, AB and Arthur Mann run out onto the pitch to a huge cheer from the West Brom Fans. They even worse, they were wearing West Brom kit......I had been betrayed!! (Its a good job I've grown up since!!)
