It was the fourth round of the FA Cup, at Highbury. January 1969 I think. I was about 12. I had been going to the Valley regularly that season having made my debut a year or two earlier when my older sister and her boyfriend took me along and I was hooked. This season we were doing well in Division 2 and I was allowed to go on the train from Blackheath with a friend or friends.
In the third round we had beaten Palace after a replay, winning at Selhurst 2-0 in front of a huge crowd. Ray Treacy, got at least one of the goals, maybe both. I had been allowed to go to that game with a mate too. but my dad wouldn't let us go to Highbury on our own so he got 4 tickets in the West stand and took me with my friend and his dad. It was the only football game I ever went to with my dad, who wasn't really into the footy.
Highbury was sold out. A large number of Charlton fans were in the North Bank and it seemed pretty lively down there. I had never before sat in a stand at football and it felt well posh having your own seat. The marble halls of the West Stand only added to the sense of grandeur. It gave me a feeling I can still remember better than the actual game (we went down gallantly 0-2 to a top Div 1 team).
