Mickey Burns: the 1976 League Cup run and Final, the fans, but bad times after Lee and Dinnis

Personal highlights at Newcastle United…

‘The League Cup Final in 1976 was a great experience, despite the result, the whole cup run and chance to play at Wembley really stands out. As did the season we got into Europe. We had a really good season that year. We beat Liverpool 1-0 at St. James’ Park which was typical of that season, especially as Liverpool where the team of the ‘70s so that result was great for us and the fans. We really toughened up that season and had a great togetherness in the squad.’

‘Of all the clubs I played for Newcastle was my best period. The passion for football of the Geordies is unrivalled.’

Mickey Burns on the Toon Army…

‘The fans are legends up there. They really love their football and know their stuff. Before joining the club I didn’t realise how passionate they were and to a degree they are probably more passionate than anywhere else.’

Mickey on the League Cup Final defeat in 1976…

‘We received a terrific reception despite the result. It was a great experience to play at Wembley in front of our fans. (On the flu bug that hit the team) I was lucky not to be affected; we travelled down on the Thursday although a few of the team didn’t join us till the Friday.

Worst memories…

The time after when Gordon Lee and then Richard Dinnis left the club wasn’t the best. The new manager came in and did not really fit into the philosophy of the club.’

We are supporting the project by helping to collect NUFC memories online - fans can share their memories on the Replay Football website, simply select the Toon Times tag when submitting yours.
