David Ginola: "This is how the passion is in the North East", wanting to be a professional footballer

Newcastle United (1995-1997)

Best memory…

My first memory is probably when I played my first game, my away game, we came back to Newcastle, we beat Sheffield Wednesday away then we came back to Newcastle and we had a drink in town with the boys and I had people throwing themselves to my feet and I didn’t understand I had never had that before and the boys, they were saying to me, welcome to Newcastle now David. .

Memories before he joined the club…

I just knew that Kevin Keegan was in charge because I was watching him at Liverpool when they beat St Etienne. This is when I said to my dad “this is what I want to do in life, I want to be a professional football player.” So, I was watching St Etienne against Liverpool and Kevin Keegan was there and Terry Mac and when I heard that they were manager and assistant coach I said, well, that would be nice.

David Ginola

Toon Times will culminate with a major Newcastle United exhibition at the Discovery Museum, Newcastle, although in the lead up to this event Toon Times wishes to reach out to all Newcastle United fans across the North East and further afield to get involved and share their memories, experiences, photos and memorabilia what people have collected over the years.

We are supporting the project by helping to collect NUFC memories online - fans can share their memories on the Replay Football website, simply select the Toon Times tag when submitting yours.
