John Duns: 1975, my first match - Supermac

My First Match was against Everton on the 12th April 1975. I had not been allowed to go previously as my parents thought it was too dangerous.

As a result me and my friend, very nervously, sneaked into Town. Turning up at the gate at 1pm and queued up with the rest of the supporters to get a glimpse of the team. I remember it was around 25p for children to get in!

I found myself in the Gallowgate Wing Paddock, and got a glimpse of my idol…the biggest star at Newcastle United during the 1970s…Super Mac! It was like meeting a film star! I couldn’t believe how big he was as he stood before me on the pitch.

As a child the only football on television was Match of the Day and Shoot on ITV. For those of you who can’t remember Shoot, it was very poor quality with some questionable camera angles during the coverage of games.

The match itself was terrible, we lost 1-0 but it didn’t matter I had seen Super Mac! I had seen Newcastle United! And as a result I have watched them ever since.

John Duns

Malcolm Macdonald - Supermac - was signed from Luton Town in 1971, scored a hat-trick on his home debut against Liverpool and went on to score 95 goals in 187 appearances before his transfer to Arsenal in 1976.
