Chris Thompson: A collection of memories

I was there for the first time when Stan Anderson equalised for 1-1 against Charlton(1964)

I was there when you arrived at 1 and were hoarse with singing by kick off at 3

I was there when you bought ice lollys in mid January from the seller patrolling the pitch perimeter at half time

I was there when the galloping major was the stand out player at Jackie’s testimonial

I was there when Suddick pulled the Bury defenders shorts down, the match lasted 101minutes

I was there when McGrath “clattered” Bolton’s Wyn Davies

I was there when the shirts were thrown into the crowd at promotion

I was there when Willie Penman floored Middlesborough’s Ratcliffe with a great right hook

I was there when they played Blackburn and it was so foggy you could’nt see the other end of the pitch

I was there when Wyn soared so high

I was there when they came back with the cup

And I was there when McNamee hung in the mackems net!!

I was there when Supermac scored 3 then got carried off

But then I went to sea

We sucked Keegans shot into the net then waved him off in his helicopter

I was there when he came back as the savior

I was there when he gave us 5-0s, 6-0s,7-1s,4-3s et al

I was there when he gave us Killer, Cole, Beardsley, Sir Les, Tino, Philippe, Ginola and Shearer

I was there when he left

I was there when he came back

I was there when he gave us hope

And yes I was there when we beat Barca and Juve , and also got beat off Inter

I was there at all the fairs cup games

I was there when Philippe put the icing on the cake for 5-0

Sadly I was there when ManU won at Cardiff, a sad trip home!

I achieved my ambition in 1998 but that ended in disappointment at Wembley too

I was there when the popular side was open and you sang in the leases end,

You got crushed on the way out down the steps at the Gallowgate end,

The toilets..well least said here, the transfer gates between the popular side and the ends,

The club shop…a caravan in the car park no less!

I was there to cheer Anderson, Cass McGarry, Suddick, Jinky, Wyn, Supermac, and Oh so many others

Favourite player? To many to pick from

Favourite game, easy take your pick 5-0, or beating the Mackems 5-1

Favourite era, Keegan’s probably, but maybe Robson’s as well

We’ve had thin and thinner with a taste of just how good things can be

Yes I am still there. Now you see me with Grandad No 9 on my shirt, with daughter(yes daughter) and 2 grandchildren as well

I have memories some great, others not so good but I am Geordie, it is what I am, who I am, I am Black and white as simple as that!

My last comment

HOWAY ME BONNY LADS!!
