Steve Harper & Rob Lee: a disputed save on Tynemouth Beach

Speaking after Steve Harper’s 20 year Charity Match on Wednesday 11th September 2013. Harper and former team mate Rob Lee shared some Newcastle United memories with Newcastle United Foundation’s Toon Times Heritage Project. The match itself was attended by over 50,000 fans and raised funds for Newcastle United Foundation, Sir Bobby Robson Foundation and Great North Children’s Hospital.

Steve Harper’s Memories of Newcastle United…

I was a Liverpool fan as a kid but, when I got involved in the youth team and everything, it was special and to have been here for well over half my life, well, I’m a fan now.

Rob Lee on Steve Harper…

I started Steve Harpers Career, and he will confirm this. I remember him as a 16 year old, I think he was a school boy, and I’d just joined. We were playing on Tynemouth beach, Keegan took us down there to play 8 a side and he (Harper) was drafted in. I think it was two all I think, on Tynemouth beach and in the last minute we got a penalty. So I took it and Steve Harper was in goal and I let him save it. So it started his career and he’s been grateful ever since.

Steve Harper in response to Rob Lee’s claims…

"No, he didn’t let me save it, I was a young lad and I had training with the first team on Tynemouth beach and I made an absolute World class save from a penalty which he claims he let me save but no, he certainly didn’t let me save it, I earned that one!"

We are supporting the project by helping to collect NUFC memories online - fans can share their memories on the Replay Football website, simply select the Toon Times tag when submitting yours.
