Mark Wilson: Ayresome Park

The half time schools penalty competition was always the opportunity for the Holgate end to have a little fun and roar at whoever was taking them. More often or not they would select the weediest looking 5 lads, the smallest goal keeper or anyone wearing Red to cheer on in what was a nerve racking first ever appearance in front of a big crowd for those selected.

I never saw a dirty pair of boots worn by anyone, all of them had shirts tucked in and socks pulled up, even if some of the school kits were a little tatty they were all worn with pride. You could always tell the confident players they would usually want to replace the ball and didn't have much interest in the crowd until after the kick, the Holgate always liked a cheeky lad who saluted to them after scoring !

Bring back the Schools Penalty Competition and brighten up the Riverside half time!
