Michael Tiplady: 1997, Champions League qualification at one of my first matches

I can always remember one of my first ever games at St James' Park - i was 13 and bright eyed on the last day of the 96/97 season and we were playing Nottingham Forest. If we won, we'd have to wait on the Liverpool score to go above them into the Champions league. We sat in the old family enclosure at the front on the half way line perfect viewing. 1 after the other we banged them in and me and my mate got more an more excited, i even managed to get told off for knocking an advertising board down when we scored the fifth!

Final whistle blew and it felt like an eternity to wait on the liverpool score, but then we started hearing pockets of euphoric cheering, that was it. We were into the champions league. Amazing, fans stayed in the grounf for what seemed like hours to celebrate and cheer on our heroes on their lap of honour. So proud of them, even at a young age.

That day will stay with me forever!

Michael Tiplady
