We were playing at home to Arsenal, a big game, all tickets sold. About 11am I get a call from the receptionist 'I've got someone on the phone who says that Kevin Costner wants to come to the game'. Oh really I thought, put him on. 'Hey Mr Stride, Kevin and his girlfriend are Arsenal supporters and want to come to your match', 'OK I said so that's two tickets right .?' 'Well no there's his P.A., his two bodyguards and two friends, seven in total. We are setting off now and I'll keep in touch with you throughout the journey'. I put the phone down convinced it was a wind up.
Anyway true to his word the driver kept calling me, 'we are just leaving London, we are just on the M1, we are stuck in traffic'. Meanwhile I had to reallocate some Managers and Scouts from the Directors Box to make room for the Costner party, just in case. It was now 2-30pm and no sign of them. Then I received a call just before kick off to say they were in Witton Lane. I rushed from the Trinity Road Stand to the car park at the back of the North Stand and there in a 'V' shape, just like the magnificent seven was Kevin and his party. The game had started when they took their seats so I waited until half time to introduce them to the Chairman, Doug Ellis. True to form his words on being introduced to Kevin Costner were ' hello, pleased to meet you, and what do you do for a living !'
