Barbara Hurst: 1990s: my first match, Newcastle United v. Chelsea

My First Match was against Chelsea in the late ‘90s against Chelsea at St. James’ Park. I remember we got beat 1-0 and Zola scored. I thought the stadium was just lovely and very impressive and even more so now it is even bigger!

I used to go to the games if a friend or relative was not using their season ticket. My parents were not football fans but my three brothers are massive Newcastle United fans with season tickets and they persuaded me into supporting too.

My two sons are massive fans too I can’t remember the game but I used to take the kids, it was great sharing the experience with them and seeing their faces as they went into St. James’ Park.

My best memory had to be seeing the club get promoted from the old First Division under Kevin Keegan (although I was never a big fan of him he always seemed to walk out on people).

But my favourite manager was Bobby Robson, such a gent! In fact my sister in law is related to him somehow although I never met him.

My favourite player was Alan Shearer – such a good player and scored lots of goals.

Newcastle lost 1-0 at home to Chelsea in both the 1998/1999 and 1999/2000 seasons

Barbara took part in a memory sharing session at St. Oswald’s Hospice, Gosforth on 3rd September 2013. These sessions are designed to engage participants in the heritage of the club and bring history to life through football.

Newcastle United Foundation have a heritage project for fans of all ages called Toon Times.

Toon Times will culminate with a major Newcastle United exhibition at the Discovery Museum, Newcastle, although in the lead up to this event Toon Times wishes to reach out to all Newcastle United fans across the North East and further afield to get involved and share their memories, experiences, photos and memorabilia what people have collected over the years.

We are supporting the project by helping to collect NUFC memories online - fans can share their memories on the Replay Football website, simply select the Toon Times tag when submitting yours.
