Alistair Cook: 1997/1998 Champions League

"I had a season ticket in the Milburn Stand for over 12 years and was lucky enough to see all the home games when Alan Shearer was our number 9. But the one game that stands out for me was the Champions League clash with Barcelona in September 1997. For that game I was lucky enough to get a seat in the East Stand and I remember the Champions League music reverberating around St James Park and realising that this was a special night, one to cherish. Seeing the Champions League banner in the centre circle and the music filling the stadium was a proud moment. The atmosphere was tremendous.

My favourite Newcastle player at the time and he still remains my favourite to this day was Faustino Asprilla and he obviously played a major part in this game. The manner of his hat-trick, especially the Gillespie runs and assists and the way he dispatched his two headers was fantastic. He was up for that game, it was clear to see from the start. Not even the late fight back from Barcelona could spoil the party. I was so excited with the result I wanted to get back home and see the highlights on TV and in my haste I crashed into a Citroen on my way home. An evening I will never forget for many reasons. "

I live and work in Manchester now and get up to games when I can which unfortunately is less and less now.”
