Dennis Prudhoe: 1970 Fairs Cup

A wet and windy March night in 1970 Anderlecht the visitors with a 2-0 lead from the first leg . The Mags are magic overturning the deficit with 2 goals from Pop Robson and 1 from Dyson.

It looked like an easy win because our defence was rarely troubled then in the second half a long ball from Anderlecht’s defence sees Ollie Burton in good position to clear but a gust of wind altered the flight of the ball and he couldn’t get a clean contact.

Anderlecht picked up the loose ball and went on to score. We went out on away goals. Leaving the ground there were loads of kids and adults in tears with the huge swings of emotion during the match. It might have been over 40 years ago but I remember Ollie going for that ball as if the match was yesterday.
