Jimmy Nicholson: memories of the 1940s

I can remember the Newport County match on the 5th October 1946 like it was yesterday. Newcastle won 13-0, which was a record score at the time – I think it still is. It was Len Shackleton’s first game, he had only signed for Newcastle 4 days before - and he scored six! Wayman got 4, Bentley scored 2 and Milburn got 1. Wayman missed a penalty in the first minute of the game.

I can remember the exact line up too. Forwards were Milburn, Bentley, Shackleton and Wayman…

Newport County played in all gold – in fact it’s interesting because they’ve just come back into the league!

When I was walking back from St. James’ Park, I must have been about 12 or 13 years old, I got to this street and there was a woman standing at the door and she asked ‘how they done today son?’ I told her the score, 13-0 and she wait ‘What?’ she couldn’t believe it!
