I used to work in a primary school in Hebburn, I was one of the only women in the area that ran a football team, the school football team. All the kids supported Newcastle United, so I rang and asked if I could bring them in for a visit. I got a lovely reply from a Mr Wharton, the team physiotherapist, who said that the boys could come.
We had a great tour of the club, the boys were allowed to touch the players football boots in the changing room, the kids were in awe. They weren’t allowed to go on the pitch though, so we just put one toe on each. As we were leaving a door opened and we saw Joe Harvey sat at his desk. If I remember rightly, this was the same day that Wyn Davies got transferred! Wyn was a god to the kids, they loved him. He was like the David Beckham of his day.
I worked in that school for over forty years, I taught some of the boys children. When I saw them as adults they told me they still remember the day they got to go to St. James’ Park. It was very special to them.

Newcastle United Foundation have a heritage project for fans of all ages called Toon Times.
Toon Times will culminate with a major Newcastle United exhibition at the Discovery Museum, Newcastle, although in the lead up to this event Toon Times wishes to reach out to all Newcastle United fans across the North East and further afield to get involved and share their memories, experiences, photos and memorabilia what people have collected over the years.
We are supporting the project by helping to collect NUFC memories online - fans can share their memories on the Replay Football website, simply select the Toon Times tag when submitting yours.
