Harry Watson: 1962, my first match - seeing and meeting Bob Moncur

My First Match

I was only 9 years old, but my father let me go to the match because I was going with my friend and his 18 year old brother.

It was Wednesday evening 2/5/1962 at St. James’ Park. Newcastle United Juniors were host to Wolves Juniors. It was the second leg of the FA Youth Cup. The first Leg ended in a draw at Wolves.

I stood in the Leazes End and shouted myself hoarse. I was standing just left of the goal approximately ½ way up the Terraces. I was well kitted out for a cold night. I was wearing a black Duffel coat, a black and white scarf and bobble hat to match.

Newcastle beat Wolves 1-0 and the goal scorer was a young Scottish lad called Bob Moncur, who played Inside-Left that night. There were two other young Newcastle lads playing who went on to stardom, Alan Suddick and Dave Craig.

What a great night that was. I remember talking non-stop about it with my parents when I got home.

I still have the match programme; 3d it cost then!

Just recently, 51 years after that great victory, I had the occasion to be at a business meeting with Bob Moncur and I reminded him of that game. He was quite surprised when I took the programme out of my pocket and asked him to sign it for me, which he did, of course.

It is true what they say, ‘All good things come to those that wait’.
