Miscellaneous contributors - a collection of memories, 1943 to 2012

‘Best ever memory was seeing Jackie Milburn score a hat trick in 1952! I feel like one of the last men alive to see Newcastle win a cup. My first match was against Sunderland in 1943 – that we won 5-2…I’ve still got Black and White blood but I gave up going.’ -Robert James

‘I’m a Rangers supporter but lived in Newcastle for 40 years. I went to the Fairs Cup match in 1969 and was stood in the Rangers end although I insist I behaved myself and did not touch the crossbar! My favourite Newcastle player would have to be Stewart Barrowclough. He was a typical old fashioned. Fast, stayed on the wing and worked hard for 90 minutes. Good crosser of the ball and scored a few goals too. -Maurice (St. Oswald’s Hospice, Gosforth)

‘My best memory has to be Shearer scoring the winner in 4-3 win against Leicester City in 1996-97 season. I nearly ended up on top of the old executive boxes in the East Stand after the weight of people coming from the back of the stand pushed me over the upper tier barrier. (Best and) Worst memory was watching the team walk out at Wembley in 1998 for the FA Cup Final against Arsenal – Tears rolling down my cheeks – then watching us get beat! I’d say I enjoyed the 5-0 win over Man Utd but I missed it as I was getting married in Hawaii I had a ticket but I gave my ticket to a Man Utd fan! I found out the result when I landed in London and thought we had been beat by 5 it wasn’t until I had a second look that I realised what had happened! -Mitch

‘My First game I saw Newcastle beat Man Utd 7-3 must have been around 1960. My greatest memories winning the Fairs Cup beating Ujpest Doza over two legs. We are still the greatest club ever even though we’ve had 50+ baron years! Long Live United! -Brian Johnson

‘My First Game was against Burnley around 1949/1950. I then went to watch Sunderland V Burnley shortly after – so despite being a Newcastle United fan I had seen more of Burnley than the club I supported in my first few games!’ - Name not provided

‘My first game was awesome! However this man came on the pitch naked! It was in 2012 against Bordeaux. It was outstanding!’ -Young female fan at the Discovery Museum
