Graham Chapman: 1982/1983, my first memories of the matchday experience on the Gallowgate

My first memory of NUFC was from around the 1982/83 seasons. Memory is patchy, I was after all only 9 years old. My uncle used to take me to the Gallowgate end and the star of the moment was Imre Varadi. My uncle Steve would sit me on one of the old concrete crush barriers and I sat there nervously for 90 minutes praying for a nil nil draw! A Newcastle goal inevitably saw me projected 20 yards forward into a heap of much larger men, only for my uncle to find me and grab me back to where he was positioned. It was pure, unpleasant hell, but I went back very time with my uncle just so that I had tales to tell in the playground the following Monday.

Now 41 yr old with a 7 year old son, I took Daniel to his first ever game, the summer friendly with Darlo from 4 years ago which was abandoned (you may recall the chants "if Sammy scores we're on the pitch"...) he now expects police horses at every game and fans being carted off to "jail" as I had told him was going to happen to the naughty boys on the pitch.

We could probably make some use of old Imre at Saturdays' game wherever he is in the world!

Graham Chapman, now living not too far away in Darlington.

Newcastle United Foundation have a heritage project for fans of all ages called Toon Times.

Toon Times will culminate with a major Newcastle United exhibition at the Discovery Museum, Newcastle, although in the lead up to this event Toon Times wishes to reach out to all Newcastle United fans across the North East and further afield to get involved and share their memories, experiences, photos and memorabilia what people have collected over the years.

We are supporting the project by helping to collect NUFC memories online - fans can share their memories on the Replay Football website, simply select the Toon Times tag when submitting yours.
