Fiona Mews: 1996, my first away game - Graham Fenton goals

My very first away match was at Ewood park home of Blackburn Rovers. It was in April 1996 and Newcastle were right up there going for the Premier League title. David Batty had scored for Newcastle and the match was nearly over and the title was in sight. Until a Geordie by the name of Graham Fenton came on for Rovers. He went on to score two goals in the last 5 minutes and Newcastle United lost. We ended up losing the title that season too and finished second in the league.

I have never been so disappointed and it was a long miserable drive home. The worst thing about it was I had won tickets to the match from a local newspaper, and for some strange reason I was sitting in the home fans section so had to make a quick exit at the end! What's more is I don't think Graham Fenton scored that many more goals in his career but he is definitely a footballer I will never forget.
