David Wales: 1965, a memorable match and the matchday experience

I was born in 1953 although the game that sticks in my memory is that I remember going to St. James’ Park in 1965 to see a game against Manchester United. We got beat 2-1, Dennis Law scored and George Best and Bobby Charlton were playing for them.

In those days if you were young you got passed over the top of crowd up to the front so you could see. I can also remember guys selling peanuts at the games and these getting thrown all over.

My family emigrated to Canada in the 1960s although when I returned to Newcastle in the 1970s I can remember a game against West Ham. There were shouts of ‘Enoch! Enoch!’ from the crowd but I wasn’t aware what this was about. It wasn’t till I got home and I was told about Enoch Powell and remarks to black players.
