Tom Robinson: memories of the 50s

After we laid the underground heating someone forgot to tell the grounds men that the pipes were only 6" below the ground. When they eventually forked the pitch some 10 weeks later guess what happened. Have a look at the size of the forks now when they come out at half-time.

I was born close to the ground in 1944, went to school next to the ground, went each lunchtime in the fifties to watch the players train. Wor Jackie used to let me take a corner during training. My effort with the heavy leather ball, wet and muddy, would be a great 5 yards along the ground chicken feed compared with Jackie's tremendous power and distance.

We school kids were asked by NUFC to assist in clearing the straw off the pitch during winter and the snow.

I have many memories and associations with the Toon over the years.
