John Morton: memories of the 1940s and 50s

My first memories of Newcastle United date back to the era of Albert Stubbins, he was the first Number Nine hero of my generation.

Getting promoted in 1948 also sticks long in my mind. I used to go to the games with my Mother on a regular basis. We used to go to the ground for 10 o’clock in the morning; fans queued down Barrack Road for 3-4 hours before the game. My Mother was less than 5ft tall so I had to run up the stairs and save us a spot right at the front so my Mother could see the game.

Me and my Mother also went to the Cup Final in 1951 at Wembley against Blackpool. We were stood behind the goal that Jackie Milburn scored his goals in. I remember Milburn running from the half way line and seeming like it took an age for him to score.

Although it was the FA Cup Semi-Final defeat to Charlton in 1947 that was the start of my realisation that Newcastle are always promising but end up having a problem by dropping players or not playing to their potential.

My Mother used to attend games with my Grandmother before the war, which has been passed to me, my children and now my grandchildren. Supporting Newcastle United has run through my family for years although I’d say it was a faulty gene!’
