ROY CAVANAGH MBE: Dave Mackay

Dave MacKay was a fantastic footballer.

Matt Busby wanted him to try and fill the impossible number six shirt at United after the death of Duncan Edwards, but although he was his Scotland manager, Busby was too late and Dave went to Spurs.

I saw him play in their 'double' side, and was also level with him and Noel Cantwell when they went into a 50/50 tackle at Old Trafford, which led to MacKay breaking his leg. That was in a European Cup Winners Cup 2nd leg when United overturned a 2-0 defeat by winning 4-1, although of course, Spurs were then down to ten men.
A top, top player.
