Roy Cavanagh MBE: Jack Crompton

Sad to hear of the passing of Jack Crompton recently. Jack was the first goalkeeper I ever saw in a Manchester United jersey. Remember those green jerseys? Thick roll collared, no sponsors, no numbers on the back! The colour was the important thing in those days, green goal-keeper, red shirts for the side. Manchester mid 1950's was a grey place, men with macs on, trilbys on head, ladies colourless dresses. So the football shirts lifted you. Jack was only small for a keeper, but a great shot stopper. After leaving United he went to Luton Town but returned at the time of the Munich crash and was coach when ten years later United won the European Cup. Top bloke.
