Peter Clarke: 1979, Frank Worthington, the 'greatest ever goal'

It was a goal that should have been good enough to win any match, however it wasn't enough to prevent Bolton going down 3-2 at home to Ipswich in April 1979.

I was there to witness it, but am glad too that it was covered by Granada, as the goal was, several years later voted the greatest ever goal on ITV.

The goal was scored by Frank Worthington who received the ball on the edge of the area, back to goal with the whole defence behind him. The first touch is a header, followed by three 'keepy uppy' kicks, the last of which is over his head and the advancing defence leaving him in clear space for a volley into the bottom corner.

Words can't do it justice - but thankfully it is on YouTube for all the world to marvel at!

I hadn't seen this before but I have just watched it on Youtube and it is just fantastic. Worthington was something else.
