In my youth, and I mean youth ( 12/ 13) I used to tell my mum that I was going to the swimmers on a Saturday afternoon when I'm fact I was going to see Cliftonville FC.
The rush of not only breaking the rules but also going into an area in Belfast that was extremely dangerous as the troubles were in full flow at the time, that was very exciting to me!'. I'll never forget entering " the cage" usually on my ownsome was an incredible feeling. The result was really not important but the thrill of being part of a travelling group of reds going mental when the ball hit the back of the net was insane.
The trip home usually involved confrontation with the RUC and i was always relived to make it into town unscathed. I would then find a way of wetting my towel and my hair to give the impression I'd actually been to the swimmers.
