Cliff Marshall: career memories

The game that sticks in my mind was when we played Plymouth Argyle in the cup, we had a horrendous journey down there and when we arrived, the pitch was very heavy, really muddy, not the kind of pitch I could play on as I was a winger and my game was built around speed. We won 3 or 4 – 1 and I scored but it was ruled out for offside! That really sticks in my mind!! I do remember putting in some nice crosses in my games and they were usually balls into Bob Latchford, who had the real knack of finishing.

When I was growing up, I had two childhood heroes. Pele and George Best. I was fortunate enough to go and play for Miami in the American Soccer League. Pele was at the New York Cosmos, George Best, Rodney Marsh and Franz Beckenbauer were also over playing in the league and I achieved a childhood dream of playing against some of the greatest ever footballers.
