It must have been 1977 or '78. Everton versus Stoke City at Goodison Park. It may well have been cold. If remembered Summers are always hot, remembered football matches are often freezing. At a guess, I'd say the game ended nil-nil. It was definitely a dull game.
Except for this one passage when Duncan McKenzie seemed to dance from one side of the pitch to another, around the halfway line. The ball never threatened to get away from him. He dummied a backheel or two, shimmied a little. He seemed to have radar because he knew when an increasingly frustrated Stoke player was about to go for him, but he just shifted and adjusted and avoided serious contact. He wasn't a coward at all. He could just avoid contact without losing the ball.
No progress was made. It didn't lead to a goal. But it was an exhibition of great skill that the crowd rose to applaud.
